"Learn How To Litter Train Your Dog Quickly!"

We’ve all heard about dogs being house trained to use litter boxes, but is it a practical method of house training your dog. If you’re dog is a small dog it is. If you have a large dog it’s a bit more challenging but can be done.

Why would you want to consider litter training your dog? Well if you have a small dog, it’s a big plus for your small dog to be able to go when it needs to. This helps avoid accidents often caused by small bladders. House training your dog to use a litter box allows owners to travel easily as well.

To start litter training your dog, you need to collect a few supplies – a litter box that doesn’t have a lid, litter filler, paper or pee pads to put in the litter box, paper towels, a scoop to dispose of waste, a broom, some sort of odor controller and a garbage close by. You may want to consider using a “potty aid” liquid in the litter box to encourage your dog to use the litter box while house training as well. Bleach, candles, plug-ins and spray deodorizers can be used to make sure that odor doesn’t become a problem in your home. Making sure you keep the elimination area clean will help too.

As with any kind of training, accidents can and will happen when you begin house and litter box training.  Remember that you must completely clean any area your dog urinates at that is unacceptable and to avoid that area from becoming a spot the dog will continue to use.

You'll need to work with your dog closely!  The best method for house training dogs is to design the environment so that it is difficult for your dog to fail.  Your dog wants to please you, and you can help them succeed!   See House Training Your Dog to learn more about setting up your house training area.

At the outset, you'll need to get the dog used to simply getting in and out of the box.  This can be made into a fun experience for the dog.  Simply lift and place the dog in the litter box and use the key phrase like "use the box".  Praise your dog.  He'll likely get out of the box.  Walk over, repeat the key word/phrase, and put your dog back in the box.  Repeat the "praise" routine and even give a little treat.  After a few sessions, you should be able to have dog go in the box on his own when the keyword is used.  Placement of the box is also important.  It must be next to  newspapers, and be placed in a corner to minimize messes when your dog goes digging as is their instinct.  A well arranged litter box area minimizes messes from a digging episode or normal tracking.

Training your dog to use a litter box means they can come and go as they please.  Bad weather, cold weather, or if you’re not home -- it doesn't matter!  Litter box training your dog will make both you and your dog much happier.
